Sitges

Sitges has a bohemian spirit , Its laid-back credentials were established in the 18th century when wealthy traders set up holiday villas, attracting artists and writers looking for inspiration from the azure waters, whitewashed houses and wild landscapes. Its reputation as a hang-out for European intelligentsia was sealed when, in the late 19th century, Picasso and his set began chilling out here there are even a few decent art galleries.

Sitges is also a splendid place for beach lovers and sun-worshippers. The beaches in the city and towards the eastern end, such as Aiguadolç and Els Balomins, are the most relaxed. San Sebastiá, Fragata and the Beach of the Boats are excellent options for families as the water is quite shallow and therefore safe for children. The Platja de la Ribera in the west is popular with a young, hip crowd. In all there are 17 beaches, including Punta de la Torrenta. If you enjoy walking and prefer to bathe in a more bucolic setting, head south towards Vilanova i la Geltru, the next town on the coast.

Diversity is the norm in Sitges rather than the exception and people from all walks of life are made welcome. Sitges is popular with the gay community. [Gay Sitges Guide]. How Sitges became a gay resort is a bit of a mystery. Few people seem to know how it had all begun. In the end, everyone ends up resorting to the same old cliché (and, like most clichés, there's some truth in it): gay people tend to have better taste, that's all. Sitges has a sandy beach, a historic old town, no high rises and hardly any chain stores.

Today, Sitges can be considered a dynamic cultural oasis, basing its economy on tourism and culture offering more than 4,500 hotel beds, half of them in four-star hotels. The firm commitment for quality infrastructures has converted Sitges into a first-class destination in terms of tourism of congresses, conferences, seminars and company meetings in the Mediterranean area.

Sitges is very international. Almost 35% of the approximately 26,000 permanent inhabitants are from the Netherlands, Great Britain, France and Scandinavia, whose children attend international schools in the area.

Whether you're looking for gay-friendly accommodation, or places to eat, drink or dance the night away, Sitges has it all.
